The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development has signed contracts worth MVR 60.57 million for a new dinghy jetty and beach protection works in Kaafu Atoll, Villingili.
The contracts were awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in a ceremony held in Dharubaaruge yesterday.
State Minister Ismail Hamid signed the agreements on behalf of the ministry, while MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Sauhee signed on behalf of the contractor.
Under the Villingili Dinghy Jetty Development Project, the contractor will dredge 3,698 cubic metres of the harbour basin, install 3-metre-wide revetment and construct a 74-metre quay wall. The project also includes a 24-metre breakwater and a 74-metre-long, 2-metre-wide quay wall area.
The jetty project is valued at MVR 14.91 million and has a 150-day completion period.
The separate Villingili Beach Protection Project will reclaim 1.09 hectares of land, install 150 metres of revetment and construct a 181-metre breakwater. The project is also valued at MVR 45.66 million and must be completed within 180 days.
MTCC said the beach protection works will help address coastal erosion and provide residents with a protected shoreline.
The new dinghy jetty is also expected to ease difficulties faced by people travelling to Villingili by providing improved access to the island.
