The People’s Majlis has voted to extend the current parliamentary session until 27 August, allowing additional time to complete pending legislative work.
The motion was passed with 58 members voting in favour and nine against during today’s sitting.
The proposal to extend the session was submitted by Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla, who said the extension was necessary to complete important work remaining before the session concludes.
This is the second extension of the current session. The session was originally scheduled to end on 15 August but was previously extended until 20 August.
Under the Parliament’s Standing Orders, the Majlis operates through three sessions each year. The first session runs from 1 February to 15 May, while the second session runs from 1 June to 15 August. The third session is scheduled from 1 October until the end of November.
Parliamentary rules allow a session to be extended when important matters submitted to the Majlis remain unfinished. An extension requires approval through a vote by members.
Among the pending matters is a proposed amendment to the Decentralisation of Administrative Areas Act submitted by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru.
The proposed amendment would give the central government greater authority to acquire land under the jurisdiction of local councils for government development projects.
The extension will allow the Majlis additional time to consider this and other pending legislative matters before adjourning for the session.
