The government has begun distributing teak plants to interested resorts as part of its 5 million tree plantation initiative.
The teak plants were donated to the Maldives by the Sri Lankan government in support of the nationwide programme. Following the arrival of the first shipment, the government has already dispatched teak plants to be planted at all airports across the country.
The process of donating two teak trees to each participating resort is currently underway. In the second phase of the initiative, arrangements are being made to distribute teak saplings to all inhabited islands. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism informs that these teak trees will be planted as green landmarks in all islands.
To mark World Environment Day, a range of tree planting activities will take place across the Maldives. In June, special programmes are scheduled in Maa Atoll, Raa Atoll and Shaa Atoll. A banner campaign has also been launched to promote the 5 million tree initiative, with one island in each atoll chosen to showcase the project.
According to government figures, a total of 565,000 plants have been planted to date under the programme.
