The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has disclosed the deployment of 19 Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in various locations across the Maldives, encompassing 7 sports FADs and 12 pole and line FADs.

The introduction of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) is part of a governmental initiative designed to bolster and augment the livelihoods of fishermen. These FADs encompass both pole and line and sports variants, presenting valuable resources and opportunities for fishing communities.

The newly established FAD sites are as follows:

  • Gadhdhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll
  • Buruni in Thaa Atoll
  • Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll
  • Veyvah in Meemu Atoll
  • Mahibadhoo in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll
  • Fonadhoo in Shaviyani Atoll
  • Hulhumale’ in Kaafu Atoll

Presently, there are 80 FADs deployed across diverse locations in the Maldives, comprising 65 pole and line FADs and 15 sports FADs.

Nevertheless, to ensure the efficacy of these FADs in assisting fishermen, specific regulations are enforced. Activities such as sinking fish, capturing sharks, laying lanes, and using pits as bait within 3 miles of FAD boundaries are legally prohibited.

Furthermore, damaging FADs or engaging in any actions that may compromise their fishing potential are strictly forbidden and subject to enforcement measures.
