President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government is finalising plans to upgrade Kaadedhdhoo Airport to international standards, with practical work expected to begin by mid-year.
Speaking at a weekly press conference, the President stated that planning for the project is nearing completion, although progress has been slower than initially anticipated. He said the government has opted to implement the project through an investor-financed model rather than direct state budget expenditure, in an effort to ensure financial feasibility.
The development marks a revision of an earlier proposal to construct a new international airport on the island of Thinadhoo. Under the updated plan, the existing Kaadedhdhoo Airport will be significantly expanded and linked to Thinadhoo via a bridge, enabling it to serve the wider Huvadhoo Atoll region.
The project aligns with a pledge made by President Muizzu in May last year, with the administration reiterating its commitment to delivering the upgrade within realistic timelines.
Kaadedhdhoo Airport, which opened in December 1993, was the first domestic airport in Huvadhoo Atoll. The airport is currently operated by Villa Air and is located approximately 3.7 kilometres from Thinadhoo.
