The government has handed over ambulances to 27 islands as part of ongoing efforts to expand healthcare delivery across the Maldives.
Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has been tasked with delivering ambulances to 56 islands, as specified by the Ministry of Health. The initiative, which began on 19 January, has seen ambulances assigned to island hospitals, with MPL confirming that the remaining vehicles will be transferred in the coming weeks.
The project follows community outreach visits by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, during which he met local institution heads and enquired about challenges faced by residents. The government noted that the lack of reliable and continuous emergency medical transport has become a widespread concern, and this initiative aims to address the issue and improve patient access, reinforcing the national healthcare system.
The Ministry of Health awarded the USD 4,224,510.36 project to MPL under a contractor financing scheme. Vehicle keys have already been distributed to the 56 islands receiving ambulances.
The Ministry also confirmed that new ambulances will be provided for an additional 31 islands, alongside 10 paramedic ambulances for the Greater Malé region, within this year.
