Gov’t Launches Operation to Tackle Rainy Season Flooding

The government has initiated an operation to provide temporary relief until road upgrades to modern standards can be implemented in a bid to tackle the recurring issue of flooding during the rainy season.
The joint effort involves collaboration between the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, and Road Development Corporation (RDC), with an initial focus on the flood-prone West Park area.
During the project’s inaugural ceremony, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, underscored the temporary nature of the initiative while stressing its crucial role in addressing potential emergency situations. Central to the project is the installation of essential drainage facilities in the West Park area, with plans underway to extend efforts to other flood-prone regions.
Simultaneously, measures are being taken to deploy drainage pumps to alleviate water accumulation in Male’ City, alongside upgrades to existing pumps along Ameenee road.
Emphasising the urgency of the situation, Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, highlighted the government’s commitment to mitigating rainfall-induced damage amidst the challenges posed by rapid global climate change. This initiative aligns closely with President Muizzu’s overarching vision for national welfare.
Echoing this sentiment, Minister of Defense, Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to road reconstruction efforts while prioritising measures to minimise damage caused by heavy rainfall for residents.
To assist affected residents, financial aid and temporary relocation facilities are being provided, alongside plans to develop roads to modern standards and upgrade Boduthakurufaanu road with Chinese assistance. Additionally, the tarring of roads in Male’ City is slated to commence practical implementation by the year’s end.
