The government has opened registration for part-time drivers to join the new Malé Taxi Line service, aimed at addressing ongoing challenges in public transportation.

The Taxi Line was originally scheduled to launch around July last year, but the service was delayed. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has now confirmed that the service will begin very soon.

MTCC stated that part-time drivers interested in joining the service can register through the designated online portal. The government first announced a recruitment drive for drivers in November last year, seeking 407 drivers in total, including 122 part-time positions.

At that time, 366 applications were submitted, with 188 for full-time roles and 178 for part-time. Walk-in interviews were also conducted to finalise the selection of drivers.

The Taxi Line will operate 24 hours a day and allow passengers to request rides through a dedicated mobile application. MTCC will provide the service using electric vehicles (EVs), modelled on international app-based taxi services such as Uber and Grab.

Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen previously stated that the service would initially deploy 100 vehicles, including smaller taxis designed to navigate narrow lanes. The government expects the new service to improve accessibility and quality in the public transportation sector.

A contact number for the Taxi Line service, 1655, was also introduced yesterday as preparations for the launch continue.
