The government is preparing for a large-scale celebration of the Maldives’ 60th anniversary of independence, scheduled for next month.

The Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, Adam Naseer Ibrahim, stated that preparations are well underway, with the Ministry leading efforts to organise a memorable occasion.

This year’s Independence Day festivities will feature a variety of vibrant and engaging activities. The planned events include the sharing of historical facts and information relevant to the country’s independence, as well as the return of key highlights such as the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) military parade and the widely anticipated float procession in the capital, Malé.

Additional events are expected to take place in both Malé and Hulhumalé, with awareness programmes set to be aired on television and radio. According to the Ministry, logistical preparations are ongoing across the board.

Minister Adam Naseer highlighted the importance of formally commemorating such milestones, stressing that they serve not only as national celebrations but also as important moments to be remembered and passed down to future generations.

In preparation for the 60th anniversary, the Ministry has also invited submissions for the design of a special logo to mark the occasion.

Independence Day, observed annually on 26 July, commemorates the Maldives’ liberation from British colonial rule in 1965. The country had been under British protection since 1887.

In contrast to this year’s planned festivities, the government scaled down last year’s Independence Day celebration by cancelling the float procession and other public events as part of austerity measures aimed at reducing government spending.
