Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has stated that the government’s vision for the sports sector extends beyond the construction of facilities, focusing instead on establishing a sustainable and structured system for sports development across the Maldives.

The Minister made the remarks while addressing the Maldives Sports Awards 2025 ceremony, highlighting that commitments made to the sports sector at the outset of the administration are being implemented through a comprehensive long-term national framework.

He noted that the government’s objective is not merely to build playgrounds, but to develop a strong and sustainable system that supports the overall growth of sports in the country. The long-term roadmap sets out the strategic direction for the sector, integrating infrastructure development, youth-centred programmes, advanced training pathways and increased opportunities for international exposure.

According to the Minister, projects under the roadmap include the construction of modern sports facilities nationwide, alongside initiatives to identify and nurture emerging talent. Structured coaching programmes and development initiatives are being aligned with national performance targets to strengthen the competitiveness of Maldivian athletes at the international level.

The government has accorded special priority to sports development, with multiple projects underway to establish modern stadiums, courts and athletic tracks across the country. Several facilities have already been completed and officially handed over.

The Minister reiterated that the overarching aim is to create a sustainable ecosystem that supports athletes, coaches and sports professionals, ensuring that the development of the sector progresses in line with national objectives and long-term planning.
