Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has disclosed plans to relocate the seaplane terminal to Full Moon resort, alongside the conversion of Velana International Airport’s (VIA) existing seaplane terminal into a private jet facility, as part of the airport’s master plan.
This strategic initiative is in line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s unveiling of VIA’s ambitious 20-year master plan earlier this year, highlighting the nation’s commitment to substantial infrastructural advancement. The blueprint aims to accommodate 25 million passengers annually, with the capability of handling 4,000 passengers per hour.
Minister Saeed outlined the notable transformations envisaged with the execution of the master plan. Alongside the expansion of the airport, discussions are ongoing with Full Moon resort management to facilitate the relocation of the seaplane terminal to their premises.
Moreover, plans include the establishment of a new domestic terminal with a capacity of serving 2,000 passengers per hour. The current infrastructure, catering to 34 simultaneous flights, will be expanded to accommodate 73 flights concurrently, significantly enhancing operational capacity and facilitating increased airline activity in the Maldives.
Improvements to the VIA fuel farm are also slated, with aircraft refueling services set to be upgraded to meet contemporary standards. Minister Saeed underscored the rapid progress of the development project under President Muizzu’s stewardship, with the new terminal anticipated to commence operations in September of this year.
Furthermore, the imminent completion of the second phase of the VIP terminal underscores the administration’s confidence in the transformative enhancements to VIA, envisaging it as a modern and proficient aviation hub, poised to serve both domestic and international travellers efficiently.
