Long-range lightning detection equipment has been installed at Velana International Airport and Gan International Airport. This system, connected to the regional network, will provide instantaneous detection of thunderstorms in the country and its surrounding areas. To enhance coverage, short-range lightning detection equipment will also be installed.

Thunderstorms frequently cause damage to electrical, electronics, and communications equipment. They can also severely impact other properties and pose risks to lives. Additionally, thunderstorms affect the safety and security of air and sea traffic.

Once the lightning detection network is fully operational, it will be capable of distinguishing and observing various stages of lightning activity immediately. The system will identify the direction of storms associated with lightning, thereby increasing the accuracy of forecasts and early warnings.

For air traffic safety, the accuracy of weather alerts (SIGMET) and forecasts (TREND) issued in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organisation standards and Sri Lankan Civil Aviation Regulation No. 3 will be significantly enhanced.
