Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage has announced the government’s plans for this year’s Maldives Independence Day celebrations.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had earlier revealed the slogan for this year’s Independence Day: “Maldivians’ own nation, Maldivians’ freedom.” Maldives celebrates its independence on July 26 annually.
The Director General of Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Athika Ibrahim detailed the array of activities planned to commemorate the occasion. Key events include an official meeting with the presidential couple and an awards ceremony for long-serving government employees. A public flag-hoisting event has also been scheduled.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in an essay writing competition, traditional sporting activities including lancing, and an art competition. Local schools will host special assemblies to mark the day.
The celebrations, commencing on July 26, will extend until July 31, 2024. Highlights include military and maritime parades by the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), a Fly Past, and a parade led by student cadets.
Additional events include a special drama launch, the “Minivan Dhuvun” (Independence Run), an entertainment show showcasing local talents, and a special evening for elderly citizens. Celebrations will also feature a film festival and commemorative activities at embassies.
Athika also revealed plans for the ‘Minivan Kaanivaa’ (Independence Carnival), a drone show, fireworks, and the ‘Minivan Sale’ (Independence Sale).
In a related announcement, Athika confirmed that festivities will take place on three islands to celebrate this year’s Eid-Al-Adha as well.
These activities underscore the significance of Independence Day for the Maldives, aiming to engage the entire nation in the celebrations.
