The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has announced that individuals can now apply for land plots even if their spouses already own housing.

The updated guidelines were published in the official gazette on 4 March, with applications opening today. The change follows the announcement in this year’s Presidential Address, where President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced he would amend the policy so that spouses can apply for housing even if they already have a flat. The decision responds to complaints that the previous policy barred applications when a spouse owned a flat.

Applications under the Goathi Gedhoru programme will remain open until 30 April and must be submitted through the housing portal. Under the policy, 1,250 square feet of land will be leased from Rasmale’. The programme includes two categories for applicants: Male’ residents and Maldivians residing outside Male’.

The Ministry confirmed that individuals whose spouses already own a house or flat are eligible to apply. Details regarding required documents and the points system for evaluation have also been published in the gazette.
