A groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday for a 13-story parking building in Hulhumalé Phase I, designed to accommodate up to 1,300 vehicles.

The project, named NXT by Batch, is being developed by Batch Construction as a private sector initiative and is promoted as a modern vertical parking and lifestyle destination aimed at supporting the future of urban mobility.

The ceremony was attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen, who noted that the building will feature parking for 500 two-wheeled vehicles and 800 four-wheeled vehicles, along with vehicle elevators, ramps and commercial spaces. Construction is expected to be completed within two years.

The project is part of a broader government initiative to address traffic congestion and the shortage of parking space in the capital. Work is also scheduled to begin soon on six additional parking buildings developed by local companies. A portion of space in all seven buildings in Hulhumalé will be designated for public use and for persons with disabilities.

Once completed, the parking facilities are expected to ease road congestion in Malé and improve the vehicle registration process. Three of the seven parking buildings will be located in Hulhumalé Phase I, while four will be in Phase II, offering a combination of private and public parking options.
