HDC Launches Safety Repairs for High-Rise Balconies After Fatal Falls in Hulhumalé

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has invited residents living in social housing units in Hulhumale to apply for structural safety modifications to windows and balcony railings to align them with official building codes.
The state enterprise announced the policy standard following two separate, back-to-back incidents in Hulhumalé Phase 2 where children fell from elevated residential towers. One of the incidents resulted in the death of a two-year-old child.

According to HDC, the safety intervention program operates under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) scheme following direct guidance from President Muizzu. The initiative aims to reinforce structural safety features across all multi-tenant residential complexes under state management.
Residents seeking assistance to repair, reinforce, or heighten balcony railings and window barriers must submit formal applications to HDC prior to 12:00 PM on 30 September.
