The Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, Adam Naseer Ibrahim, has called for renewed efforts to revive poetry among younger generations, underscoring its role in shaping the nation’s cultural identity.

He made the remarks during a ceremony held at Addu High School to mark this year’s Poets’ Day. The guest of honour at the event was Adam Abdul Rahman, recipient of the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Dhiyamigili Dynasty.

The minister described poets as essential interpreters of human experience, stating that they give voice to a society’s resilience, values and deeper aspirations. He emphasised the need for collective action to modernise and revitalise the poetic tradition in order to safeguard it for future generations.

His appeal was linked to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision of strengthening Maldivian nationalism. The minister noted that the President has consistently highlighted the importance of initiatives aimed at restoring national heritage and identity, including in his inaugural national address and in his presidential address at the opening session of Parliament earlier this year. He added that the administration is pursuing structural reforms to advance the cultural sector.

The minister further explained that heritage includes material, natural and intangible elements. He identified poetry and language as key components of intangible heritage, noting that poetry remains one of the disciplines most deeply rooted in Maldivian national life.

The ceremony also recognised contemporary literary contributions. Officials launched Guleynooranmaa, a poetry anthology by Hassan Labeeb, a native of Hithadhoo in Addu City, to whom this year’s Poets’ Day was dedicated. Labeeb was presented with a commemorative plaque in recognition of his service and achievements in the field of literature.
