Minister for Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib announced the postponement of the opening of applications for the recently announced housing schemes to January 15, 2026.
On 17 November, the government published the Residential Land for Malé Residents Policy and the Flat Allocation Policy for Malé Residents, stating that applications for the schemes would open on 4 January 2026.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office today, the minister said the ministry will also be publishing an amended version of the housing scheme as well. Minister Muththalib said the changes were made after reviewing the requests the citizens of Malé made to the President in the serial meetings he has held with them since late November.
“The policy change was made after the president met with the residents of Male’ City and implemented changes after reviewing the proposals made by the residents,” he said.
Muththalib said that the policy changes that were made include opening applications to beneficiaries who have received a one-room flat previously, beneficiaries of two-room flats, and the opportunity to apply for a three-room flat, given that they have children under the age of 18 from both genders. These beneficiaries will be required to relinquish their current housing should they receive housing under the newly announced scheme.
“With these changes, as some changes had to be made to the application forms, we have now set the date to open the application form for January 15, 2026,” he said.
The applications will be open for three months, he said.
