During a special ceremony commemorating World No Tobacco Day, Minister of Health, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, formally launched the campaign. He underscored a concerning uptick in tobacco consumption in the Maldives, particularly among the youth, citing a surge in the usage of cigarettes, vapes, and shisha.
Expressing apprehension regarding the pervasiveness of tobacco use within Maldivian society, Minister Khaleel stressed the pivotal role parents play in steering their children away from such detrimental habits.
He highlighted the significance of parental involvement in safeguarding children’s well-being and fostering positive values and behaviours, ultimately contributing to their holistic development. He further urged all parents to actively engage in this initiative, underlining their crucial role in shaping a healthier future generation.
As part of the campaign’s implementation, the current administration has outlined plans to conduct training programmes to roll out the Dhafaraa initiative across all atolls. Additionally, strategic frameworks will be established within each atoll hospital to support individuals seeking assistance in quitting smoking.
