The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has cautioned residents planning to travel during the upcoming Eid holidays to be mindful of the heightened risk of communicable diseases such as dengue and chikungunya.

According to a statement released yesterday, the agency has observed a notable increase in cases of these diseases, along with diarrhoea, influenza, and other flu-like illnesses during this period.

To curb the spread of these diseases, the HPA has advised the public to take precautionary measures. For influenza (flu), individuals are encouraged to seek medical advice if symptoms persist and to wear face masks if exhibiting signs of flu.

Additionally, maintaining regular hand hygiene by frequently washing hands with soap or using hand sanitiser is recommended.

Regarding diarrhoea and vomiting, the HPA recommends thoroughly cooking food and ensuring fruits and vegetables are washed thoroughly before consumption. Measures should also be taken to prevent insects and pests from accessing food, and fresh food should be preferred where possible.

It is advised to use covered waste bins and to dispose of waste regularly. Children showing symptoms of diarrhoea should be kept at home from school as a preventive measure.

The HPA stressed the importance of these precautions in safeguarding public health during the festive season, urging residents to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing the spread of diseases.
