The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a public advisory, calling on citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of communicable diseases while traveling during the upcoming holidays. The agency expressed concerns over the increasing number of cases of flu and diarrhea in the Maldives and emphasized the potential for further spread due to heightened travel and crowding.

According to a press release issued by the HPA, the surge in cases of flu and diarrhea has raised alarm bells. With the approaching holidays, when travel and gatherings are expected to increase, the agency stressed the importance of adopting additional measures to curb the transmission of these diseases.

The HPA urged the public to promptly test for symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza if they experience any, to help identify cases and prevent further spread. It also encouraged individuals to maintain social distancing measures while in public spaces and to prioritize personal hygiene practices.

In light of the escalating cases of diarrhea and vomiting, the HPA advised the public to diligently wash their hands with soap, particularly before food preparation and in daily routines, to mitigate the risk of contracting and spreading such illnesses. Moreover, the agency underscored the significance of adequate body coverage and the use of mosquito lotions and sprays to protect against mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and Chikungunya.

In their statement, the HPA emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if individuals experience worsening symptoms, ensuring timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

As the Maldives prepares for the holiday season, the Health Protection Agency urges the public to take these recommended precautions seriously and work collectively to prevent the further spread of communicable diseases. By adhering to these guidelines, individuals can protect themselves, their families, and the wider community from potential health risks associated with travel and crowded environments.
