Immigration Intensifies Crackdown on Undocumented Foreigners

Maldives Immigration has initiated a large-scale operation in the Male’ area aimed at identifying undocumented expatriates and foreigners operating businesses illegally.
In an announcement on X yesterday, Immigration confirmed that 211 officers have been deployed across 52 groups to inspect 26 zones within the Greater Male’ area.
This substantial mobilisation of resources is intended to maximise the operation’s effectiveness in locating expatriates involved in serious offences and summoning them for further inquiry.

The operation will also target local employers found to be illegally hiring foreign workers, who will be issued written warnings as part of the crackdown.
This effort is part of broader government initiatives, following the launch of ‘Operation Kurangi’ by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, which aims to identify the total number of expatriates in the country, distinguish between documented migrants and illegal immigrants, and offer an opportunity for the latter to regularise their status.
Since the current administration took office on November 17, 2023, authorities have apprehended and deported 3,322 expatriates as part of ongoing enforcement measures.
