The Health Ministry has reported a nationwide increase in Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI), locally known as aridhafus roaga, with influenza and COVID-19 continuing to be among the most frequently identified causes.

According to the Ministry, a total of 46,032 ARI cases were reported between 20 April and 31 May 2025 (epidemiological weeks 17 to 22). This marks a notable rise compared to the 33,948 cases recorded during the same period in 2024. ARI cases are commonly reported under symptoms such as fever or cold.

In the same period, influenza cases rose sharply, with 364 cases reported in 2025 compared to just 45 cases in 2024. COVID-19 also showed an increase, with 62 cases this year versus 27 cases last year.

The Ministry highlighted that the Malé Region reported the highest number of both influenza and COVID-19 cases. Authorities are advising the public to take preventive measures seriously, particularly amid the rising number of respiratory illnesses across the country.

Meanwhile, dengue cases have decreased significantly this year. Between January and May 2025, a total of 476 dengue cases were recorded, compared to 1,321 cases during the same period in 2024. Despite this decline, officials warned that ongoing rainfall may contribute to a potential increase in mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue. Apart from Malé, the highest numbers of dengue cases were reported in Raa, Kaafu, and Alifu Alifu atolls.

The Ministry noted that rainfall could influence the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue in the coming weeks.
