Islamic Ministry Plans for Digital Halal System

Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Zahir, announced plans to introduce a digital Halal system in the Maldives during his speech at the inauguration ceremony of the Halal Ecosystem Development 2023.

The workshop, held at the Islamic Centre in collaboration with Serunai Commerce, a Malaysian-based organization, aimed to pave the way for the implementation of a digital halal system in the country.

Minister Zahir highlighted the commencement of the Halal certification process in the Maldives back in April 2014. Presently, seven companies are utilizing the Halal certification service, resulting in over 100 different types of exported fish being issued Halal certificates.

Nevertheless, Minister Zahir acknowledged the challenges associated with issuing Halal certificates to products within the Maldives. One such challenge is the scarcity of trained professionals capable of conducting laboratory tests on these items. Furthermore, public awareness regarding Halal certification remains relatively low in the country. Minister Zahir identified the absence of a specific legal framework for Halal certification as the primary concern.

To address these issues, Minister Zahir disclosed that the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Serunai Commerce engaged in discussions to establish a digital halal system in the Maldives. Under this proposed system, exports to the Maldives would be tracked, tested, and monitored using a digitalized platform.

Moreover, talks have taken place to provide industry information and training while also establishing a laboratory dedicated to conducting tests on products. The Minister announced that the introduction of the digital halal system is expected to take place in the near future, with support from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).
