During a ceremony held to hand over the funds to island councils for waste management, Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology, Aiminath Shauna, emphasised the paramount importance of tackling the challenge of waste in the Maldives, which stands as one of the largest environmental problems faced by the nation.
Minister Shauna expressed that while the government has been actively collaborating with councils to find solutions, financial constraints have impeded progress towards an optimal resolution.
Under this scheme, the government will provide financial assistance to councils for waste management based on various factors such as population, household count, island size, and waste generation. The allocated funds will also be utilised to establish essential waste disposal facilities, the Minister revealed.
To tackle the waste problem at its core, the government has divided the country into seven regions and plans to establish modern waste management centres in three of these regions. The Green Fund is actively contributing substantial funds towards infrastructure development in the Maldives. In fact, the fund has already disbursed over MVR 260 million in the current year alone.
