The government has introduced laboratory services in Vaadhoo and Maakurathu in Raa Atoll.
The services were inaugurated by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim during separate ceremonies held on both islands. The initiative forms part of the government’s efforts to ensure that essential laboratory facilities are available across all inhabited islands.
The government aims to establish laboratory services in 76 islands where such facilities are currently unavailable by the end of this year. With the inclusion of Vaadhoo and Maakurathu, the total number of islands receiving the service has reached 18.
The introduction of laboratory services is expected to support early detection of diseases and contribute to broader public health efforts aimed at building a healthier population.
Following the inaugurations, the minister met with senior management of the health centres on both islands to discuss operational challenges and identify potential solutions.
Residents of Vaadhoo and Maakurathu have previously faced difficulties in accessing laboratory testing, as samples had to be sent to other islands or patients were required to travel. The establishment of on-island laboratory services is expected to ease access to diagnostics and improve the overall delivery of healthcare.
