Land Reclamation Completed for Dhidhdhoo Airport Project
Dhidhdhoo airport land reclamation completed for new development project
The government has completed land reclamation for a new airport in Dhidhdhoo, marking a key milestone in President Mohamed Muizzu’s infrastructure programme.
A total of 112 hectares of land was reclaimed within 50 days of the project’s commencement. Work began on 4 January and was carried out using the Leiv Eiriksson, a trailing suction hopper dredger with a capacity of 46,000 cubic metres. The president highlighted the completion of the reclamation phase in a post on social media.
The Dhidhdhoo Airport project was included in a presidential decree mandating the construction of 15 new airports during the current administration.
During a visit to Dhidhdhoo in January 2025, President Muizzu informed residents that the airport would be treated as a special priority, describing it as the most significant development project for both the island and the wider region. He stated that the project forms part of a long-term strategic plan for Haa Alifu Atoll and is aligned with broader efforts to strengthen national connectivity.
In addition to airport infrastructure, the reclamation has created land designated for housing and commercial development, reflecting the project’s dual purpose.
Dhidhdhoo has a registered population of approximately 5,000, although the actual resident population is estimated to be closer to 7,000. The island serves as a regional hub, attracting families from surrounding islands seeking access to healthcare and education. Haa Alifu Atoll comprises 14 inhabited islands and has a population of around 16,000.
Government officials have described the airport as a cornerstone of plans to establish an integrated development zone across the four northernmost atolls. The facility is expected to improve transportation links and stimulate economic activity beyond Dhidhdhoo, benefiting neighbouring islands including Vashafaru, Filladhoo, Kelaa, Muraidhoo, Baarah and Utheemu.
At present, Hoarafushi Airport is the only airport serving Haa Alifu Atoll.
