The government has announced that land reclamation for the development of a national racing track will commence next week.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu shared the update while speaking at the Espresso with the President youth event, stating that the facility is intended to enable the Maldives to host international racing and drifting competitions.
The proposed track will be developed outside the Hulhumalé highway area, with plans for a secured and fully paved circuit supported through land reclamation. The project is designed to meet international standards and provide a dedicated venue for motorsport activities.
Funding for the development has already been allocated, with the Maldives Airports Company Limited entrusted with implementation. The initiative is aimed primarily at young people and is positioned as a dedicated sporting facility to support the growth of motorsports in the country.
At present, drifting events are commonly held on wider roads in Hulhumalé, particularly in Phase Two, while similar activities also take place on other islands with paved roads, including Addu City. These events have led to complaints from residents, particularly regarding disturbances, which have been raised with the Housing Development Corporation.
The Racing Association and members of the drifting community have also repeatedly highlighted the lack of a purpose-built facility to successive administrations, with no permanent solution achieved until now.
In his Presidential Address earlier this year, President Muizzu confirmed that development of the racing track would begin within the first quarter, presenting the project as a long-awaited solution for the country’s youth and motorsport community.
