Law enforcement has identified 50 buildings being used as drug dens in Malé, according to the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology.
Speaking to the parliament’s National Security Committee, Minister Ihusaan stated that these properties include both abandoned government buildings and private properties. Most of these buildings are either vacant or abandoned, he noted.
Police assessments have been conducted on these locations, distinguishing between private properties and government buildings. Ihusaan mentioned that permits have been obtained to demolish three of the government buildings identified. Efforts are currently underway to coordinate the demolition of these structures and to secure the privately owned properties.
The Minister emphasised that efforts to combat drug sales and usage can only be effective by reducing the amount of drugs smuggled into the country. The ministry is working on drafting changes to the laws to facilitate this effort, he added.
Ihusaan confirmed that the proposed legal revisions will be submitted to the Majlis within a month.
