The second phase of the land reclamation and shore protection project in Madaveli has been awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for MVR 174 million.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony held at the Housing Ministry on Sunday afternoon. The contract was signed by the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, and MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudi.

According to MTCC, the project will involve the reclamation of 19.17 hectares of land. The works will also include the installation of 1,645 metres of revetment as well as the construction of groynes across a 120-metre stretch.

The project has been awarded at a cost of MVR 174.58 million and is scheduled to be completed within 400 days.

MTCC stated that Madaveli, which has a population of approximately 2,000 residents, has long faced housing challenges. The company noted that expanding the island’s land area through reclamation is expected to help address these housing constraints.

The shore protection component of the project is also expected to provide a significant solution to issues caused by tidal swells and coastal erosion affecting the island.
