Maldives and Japan Sign Agreement for Provision of Harbour Crafts to Coast Guard

The Governments of the Maldives and Japan have signed an Exchange of Notes for the provision of two harbour crafts to strengthen the operational capacity of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard.

The Exchange of Notes was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, and the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko. The assistance, provided under Japan’s Economic and Social Development Programme, amounts to 400 million Japanese Yen—approximately USD 2.8 million.

At the signing ceremony, Minister Khaleel expressed appreciation for Japan’s continued support to the Maldives. He stated that the addition of the harbour crafts would enhance the MNDF Coast Guard’s ability to conduct search and rescue operations, enforce maritime law, and safeguard coastal communities.

The Minister further highlighted that the cooperation demonstrated the mutual commitment of both countries to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. He also acknowledged Japan’s longstanding contributions to the Maldives’ development and maritime security, welcoming Japan’s decision to appoint a Defence Attaché to the Maldives and expressing hope for continued collaboration in defence and security initiatives.
