Maldives and Malaysia Forge Partnership for Sports Development

Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu, has unveiled a new collaborative effort with Malaysia designed to elevate sports development in the Maldives. 

The bilateral agreement encompasses a range of initiatives aimed at advancing both players and administrative personnel within various sports-related fields, aligning closely with the nation’s overarching strategy to bolster its sporting landscape.

Minister Rafiu’s announcement follows his participation in the 18th Asian Federation of Sports Medicine Congress and the 8th ISN International Sports Medicine and Sports Science Conference held in Malaysia. 

During these events, he delivered a comprehensive overview of the Maldives’ ambitious sports development plan, showcasing the country’s commitment to fostering athletic excellence. Throughout his visit, Minister Rafiu engaged in productive discussions with prominent figures, including Malaysia’s First Lady, Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, exploring collaborative opportunities to advance sports initiatives within the Maldives.

Speaking at the launch of the Maldives Open 2024 – 10 Ball Championship at the National Billiards Centre, Minister Rafiu reiterated the importance of propelling sports to new heights. He emphasised the need for additional training, rehabilitation programmes, and specialised skill development to enhance the performance of athletes. 

Minister Rafiu also highlighted the completion of a comprehensive, long-term sports development plan, emphasising ongoing efforts to implement detailed initiatives within its framework.
