This significant event is organized by the Children’s Ombudsperson’s Office in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). With the aim of assessing the current status of children’s rights, exchanging experiences, and strengthening the expertise of organizations in the region, the two-day conference was inaugurated by First Lady Fazna Ahmed.
Representatives from key institutions across seven South Asian countries, namely Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, have gathered for this vital conference. Throughout the event, participants will share their experiences and highlight best practices in promoting and safeguarding children’s rights in their respective countries. Moreover, the conference provides an excellent platform for discussing potential avenues of collaboration among institutions and fostering regional-level training initiatives.
One of the key highlights of the conference is the presentation of individual papers by each participating country, outlining their efforts to protect children’s rights and showcasing the progress made in cross-regional collaboration. Additionally, an integral aspect of the event involves children’s active participation in shaping the discourse. Children attending the conference will present a paper sharing their valuable perspectives and opinions on matters pertaining to children’s rights. Their contributions aim to emphasize the significance of including their voices in decision-making processes.
The conference will culminate in the development of a Joint Action Plan, which will serve as a comprehensive roadmap for independent institutions engaged in the promotion of children’s rights throughout the South Asian region. The plan will outline a timeline of activities at the regional level, drawing upon the insights gained from the papers and presentations delivered by the participating countries.
As the conference draws to a close, a detailed report will be compiled, encapsulating the key findings and outcomes of the event. The report will serve as a valuable resource for all stakeholders involved in the protection and advancement of children’s rights in South Asia. By fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and amplifying the voices of children, this regional consultation conference sets a positive precedent for addressing the complex challenges faced by children across the region.
