Maldives Issues Cautionary Advisory Against 15 Medicines from Thai Manufacturer

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) recently alerted travellers from the Maldives to Thailand about potential risks associated with 15 medicines manufactured by a Thai pharmaceutical company.
The cautionary advisory is in response to a specific medication produced by Seven Stars Pharmaceutical Co., which Thailand’s Drug Regulatory Authority flagged for containing a hazardous chemical in its formulation of Sorbitol – a sweetener, humectant, and stabilizer in oral liquid formulations, tablets, and capsules.

While these medications are already prohibited from import and sale within the Maldives, the MFDA emphasized the significance of the advisory due to Thailand’s popularity as a destination for medical treatment among Maldivians. Sometimes, individuals even import medications from the country for personal use.
The list of drugs for which usage is advised against includes:
- Domperstar suspension
- Co-trimoxazole mixture
- Kressbufen suspension
- Kresstrim suspension
- Kresstec syrup
- Kresscolet syrup
- Cetaphen syrup
- Fatech syrup
- Carbosol Syrup
- Kressbroxol Syrup
- Startec syrup
- Ibustar suspension
- Domperkress syrup
- Parastar suspension
- Startifen syrup
In response to Thailand’s directive, authorities there have taken steps to withdraw problematic batches of the drugs from circulation.
To prevent the entry of these drugs into the Maldives, the MFDA announced heightened scrutiny at ports for inspecting imported drugs, particularly within the pharmaceutical sector.
Travellers are strongly urged to exercise vigilance and adhere to the advisory when seeking medical treatment or importing medications from abroad.
