Maldives Local Councils Association Welcomes 26 Councils

The Maldives Local Councils Association (MLCA), established in May to promote decentralised governance, has now grown to include 26 councils.

MLCA Chairperson and President of Noonu Atoll Council, Mohamed Basheer, confirmed the association’s expansion to MV+.

In a post on X, the MLCA announced today the latest councils to join: Maaungoodhoo and Narudhoo from Shaviyani Atoll, Eydhafushi from Baa Atoll, and Kelaa from Haa Alif Atoll.

Since its inaugural meeting in Baa Atoll’s Kamadhoo last month, the MLCA has seen a steady influx of island, atoll, and city councils becoming members.

The association recently announced its executive committee, which includes:

  • Chairperson: Noonu Atoll Council President Mohamed Basheer
  • Vice Chairperson: Malé City Council Mayor Adam Azim
  • Secretary General: Baa Atoll Council President Ahmed Afrah
  • Financial Controller: Laamu Atoll Council President Ismail Ali
  • Board Members:
    • Haa Alif Atoll Council President Moosa Shafeeq
    • HDh. Hanimaadhoo Council President Abdul Sattar Hassan
    • Kulhudhuffushi City Mayor Mohamed Athif
    • B. Kihaadhoo Council President Hussain Shafiu
    • N. Kendhikulhudhoo Council President Mohamed Rauf

Secretary General Ahmed Afrah stated in May that the MLCA seeks to provide a collaborative platform for councils, enabling them to tackle shared challenges and enhance their capabilities.
