Two inmates’ deaths in Maldives Correctional Service are now under police investigation

The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into the deaths of two inmates who were serving sentences under the Maldives Correctional Service.

The deaths were reported on 2 February. The police confirmed that they are investigating the deaths of Hassan Niyaz, 45, from Dhiggaagasdhoshuge, S. Hithadhoo, who died while being treated at Hulhumalé Hospital, and Ibrahim Suhail, 53, from Dhafthar No: DR439, who passed away at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) while receiving treatment for pneumonia.

Authorities stated that autopsies will be conducted on both individuals as part of the investigation, and arrangements are being made to transport the bodies abroad for this purpose.

The Maldives Correctional Service reported that Suhail died on 2 February, one week after being admitted to IGMH due to a deterioration in his health. He had developed pneumonia while receiving treatment at the hospital and had been under medical care following a stroke suffered last year.

Niyaz experienced a sudden medical emergency on the afternoon of 2 February and was transferred to Hulhumalé Hospital at 13:30. Doctors confirmed his death at 14:05.
