The Maldives is set to launch the second version of its government e-letter management system, GEMS 2.0, in March, Maldives Digital Services has announced.

The upgraded platform is designed to operate fully paperlessly, aiming to streamline administrative processes across all government offices, eliminate the need for physical documentation, and reduce operational costs.

First introduced in 2012, the original GEMS system underwent several revisions but faced ongoing challenges in efficiency and accessibility. The new version, developed under the government’s Maldives 2.0 digitisation policy, will now be accessible globally rather than being restricted to government networks, thanks to enhanced cloud integration. Key features of GEMS 2.0 include digital signatures, case management, mail tracking, and a public document submission module.

The system is expected to manage all administrative tasks, surpassing the document storage capabilities of its predecessor. To ensure a smooth transition, over 960 government agencies are currently participating in training sessions, with the rollout scheduled to replace legacy applications in phases.
