The Maldives Meteorological Service has reported that air pollution and weather conditions across the country are expected to improve with the arrival of the new year.
According to the Met Office, central atolls are forecast to experience scattered rain today and tomorrow, with conditions set to improve from Thursday onwards. In the southern atolls, rain is expected on today and tomorrow, followed by scattered rain on Thursday and Friday, before weather conditions improve from Saturday.
Sea conditions are expected to remain mild across all regions.
The Met Office has noted that air pollution continues to persist in the northern and central atolls, although conditions have improved compared to recent days. Air quality is forecast to improve further from 1 January.
Air quality across the Maldives deteriorated to unhealthy levels in early December due to the presence of haze, posing risks particularly to sensitive groups. Unlike mist or fog, haze is caused by fine particles suspended in the air, which reduce visibility and degrade air quality.
The Maldives typically experiences haze during December and January, a seasonal phenomenon that often leads to reduced visibility and poorer air quality during this period.
