Polling stations across Male’ City opened this morning, marking the commencement of the much-anticipated city council by-elections. 

The polls opened at 08:00 am and are scheduled to close at 05:00 pm.

As of 4 PM today, the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) reported that 14,605 people have already voted, which amounts to 26.08% of eligible voters.

Here is a breakdown of the voter turnout by gender:

  • Female voters: 6,660 (11.89%)
  • Male voters: 7,945 (14.19%)
  • Total votes cast: 14,605 (26.08%)
  • Not yet voted: 41,397 (73.92%)

In terms of eligible voters, the statistics stand as follows:

  • Female eligible voters: 27,381
  • Male eligible voters: 28,621
  • Total eligible voters: 56,002

As of 3 PM

As of 3 PM today, the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) reported that 12,198 people have already voted, which amounts to 21.78% of eligible voters.

  • Total votes cast: 164,981 (58.42%)

The electorate in the Maldivian capital will cast their votes to elect a new mayor for Male’ City, along with representatives for three additional council seats – the South Maafannu seat, Central Henveiru seat, and South Henveiru seat.

A total of five candidates are vying for the position of Male’ mayor, each representing diverse backgrounds and affiliations. The candidates include Shuaib Ali running as an independent candidate, Hussain Waheed also contesting independently, Aishath Azima Shakoor from the People’s National Congress (PNC), Adam Azim representing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and Saif Fathih standing for the Democrats.

With a substantial voter base, comprising over 54,680 eligible individuals, the elections are expected to shape the future leadership of Male’ City.

To facilitate the voting process, citizens can verify their designated polling center by sending an SMS with their national ID card details and the keyword ‘VR’ to 1414.
