MFDA Warns Public About Contaminated Honey Brands

MV+ News Desk | July 22, 2024

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has issued a warning regarding the sale of contaminated honey brands marketed for medical applications. These products are being sold through local online portals and social media channels.

The MFDA has specifically flagged the brands ‘Royal Honey’ and ‘Black Horse’ for containing traces of Tadalafil, a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction under the brand name Cialis, and Sildenafil, commonly known as Viagra.

In a statement, the MFDA confirmed that the honey brands in question were previously identified in 2022 for similar issues. The authority emphasised that the products have been deemed risky and unsafe for consumption by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well.

The MFDA cautioned the public that the use of these medication-infused products could pose serious health risks, potentially leading to fatal outcomes in some cases. The authority urges consumers to avoid purchasing and using these products.
