Minister Affirms Government’s Commitment to Resolve Fishermen’s Challenges

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing challenges faced by fishermen at a ceremony launching the fisheries register and soft loan programme in Komandoo, Shaviyani Atoll.
In his address at the event, Minister Shiyam underscored the significance of the launch, hailing it as a key commitment made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu upon assuming office. He reaffirmed the President’s pledge to enhance the involvement of the fishing community in the sector, emphasising the pivotal role of the programmes initiated by the fisheries ministry.
Moreover, Minister Shiyam acknowledged the concerns raised by fishermen, acknowledging disparities in support compared to other sectors. He assured that the completion of the fishermen’s register would rectify such discrepancies, granting fishermen access to benefits similar to those available to workers in other sectors.
Additionally, Minister Shiyam addressed the financial strain encountered by fishermen, boat owners, and industry workers, affirming the government’s preparedness to alleviate their burdens. He pledged that measures would be taken to tackle issues such as outstanding loans and utility bill payments.
In emphasising Muizzu’s prioritisation of fishermen’s welfare, Minister Shiyam committed to expediting the disbursement of owed payments, with the aim of resolving outstanding issues ahead of the upcoming month of Ramadan.
