The Minister assured stakeholders that settling the remaining dues continues to be a critical agenda item.

Responding to protests at Addu Fisheries Complex, Minister Shiyam attributed delays to the extended Eid holiday period but reiterated the government’s commitment to promptly resolving payment issues. He acknowledged disruptions caused by protests, including incidents affecting the operational efficiency of the complex.

During the ceremony, Minister Shiyam also addressed recent changes in fish prices, highlighting an increase to MVR 25 per kilogram. He attributed this rise to political decisions made under the previous administration, criticising what he described as inadequate support for fishermen.

Looking ahead, Minister Shiyam outlined broader government initiatives aimed at enhancing the fisheries sector’s profitability and attracting foreign investment. He cited ongoing subsidies and investments totalling MVR 933 million as part of efforts to transform the industry.

The Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to advancing the fishing industry under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership, aiming for sustainable growth and increased revenue generation.

The protests at Addu Fisheries Complex have drawn attention to ongoing challenges within the fishing community, with stakeholders hopeful for swift resolutions under the government’s agenda.
