MMPRC Loses USD 2.5 Million Appeal in High Court

The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has lost its appeal in the High Court, where it sought to recover USD 2.5 million (MVR 38 million) from Millennium Capital Management Pvt Ltd.
The appeal followed a 2019 Civil Court ruling which found insufficient evidence to support MMPRC’s claim. MMPRC’s original case accused Millennium Capital Management of failing to repay USD 2.5 million from a USD 5 million promissory note issued in 2014, alongside an additional loan of USD 1.5 million. The Civil Court’s 2019 verdict dismissed the claim, citing a lack of compelling evidence.
In its appeal, MMPRC contended that the Civil Court’s decision was legally flawed. However, in a ruling issued yesterday, the High Court stated that MMPRC did not convincingly demonstrate any legal inconsistencies in the Civil Court’s verdict.
The High Court also addressed the issue of new evidence presented by MMPRC during the appeal. MMPRC had introduced a document not submitted during the initial trial, requesting that the Civil Court be ordered to conduct a retrial. The High Court noted that MMPRC had ample opportunity to present this document during the original proceedings but failed to do so. Consequently, the High Court declined to consider the new evidence or to order a retrial.
The High Court’s three-judge bench, comprising Judge Hassan Shafeeu (presiding judge), Chief Judge Hussain Shaheed, and Judge Mohamed Faisal, unanimously upheld the Civil Court’s verdict. They ruled that no changes were necessary, solidifying the earlier decision in favour of Millennium Capital Management.
