Muizzu Returns Land Act Amendment Bill to Parliament
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has returned a bill proposing amendments to the Land Act, which mandates the government to expedite the handover of land plots within a stipulated timeframe.
On Thursday night, the President’s Office announced that the bill had been sent back to the parliament with a request for reconsideration of its provisions. This development comes as the 19th parliamentary assembly concludes its electoral term, placing the decision in the hands of the incoming 20th parliamentary assembly.
The bill, initially submitted by former South Galolhu MP Meekail Naseem of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), was passed on April 29th. According to the proposed amendments, the government would be required to transfer land to recipients within three months from the date the permanent list of recipients is publicised.
The incoming parliamentary assembly will now review and decide on the future of the proposed amendments.
