Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has unveiled plans to ease the financial strain on customers by implementing a new discount policy for water bills.

In a recent announcement, MWSC revealed that it had extended discounts on domestic utility bills throughout the month of Ramadan, covering the billing period from March 11 to April 11. This initiative, aimed at supporting households during the holy month, resulted in total discounts amounting to MVR 14.13 million.

Building on this effort, MWSC has introduced further relief measures for its customers. Under the new policy, if a customer’s water bill for April surpasses the discounted amount received in March, MWSC will waive the balance as a discount.

Explaining the specifics of the scheme, MWSC outlined that should the waived amount fall short of 10 percent of the April bill, the discount rate will be adjusted accordingly to ensure a minimum 10 percent reduction. Moreover, even if a customer’s April bill is lower than that of March, MWSC will still apply a 10 percent discount to the April billing.

This discount scheme is not exclusive to existing customers; MWSC has confirmed that new domestic customers will also benefit from the 10 percent reduction on their April bills.

To ensure transparency and clarity, MWSC stated that customers will receive SMS notifications detailing any adjustments made to their bills.

The initiative comes in the wake of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pre-Ramadan announcement, wherein he pledged to alleviate financial burdens on households by offering discounts on domestic utility bills, including both water and electricity.

These bills, typically calculated based on average consumption during regular months, have been subject to special considerations during the holy month.
