The Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has commissioned a second reverse osmosis (RO) plant in Hulhumalé with a production capacity of 5,000 tonnes per day, strengthening water supply capacity in the Greater Malé region.
The state-owned utility provider stated that the new facility will significantly enhance its ability to deliver water to both Malé and Hulhumalé. The company noted that the plant is expected to play an important role in meeting the anticipated increase in water demand during the upcoming month of Ramadan, which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
This development marks the second 5,000-tonne water production plant established by MWSC in Hulhumalé. It follows the inauguration of a 10,000-tonne water storage tank on 17 August last year, which is the largest facility of its kind in the Maldives. The storage facility was developed at a cost of MVR 34.7 million.
MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed recently stated that ensuring water security remains the company’s top priority. He indicated that MVR 300 million has been allocated to strengthen water production and storage infrastructure. Work is also underway on the construction of two additional 13,000-tonne water production plants aimed at further expanding national capacity.
Efforts to enhance water infrastructure have intensified in the years following the severe water crisis in Malé in 2014, when a fire at an MWSC production facility disrupted running water supply in the capital for more than a week. During that period, neighbouring countries provided assistance by supplying thousands of tonnes of water to the Maldives.
