The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) remains the only political force capable of delivering good governance and prosperity to the Maldivian people, party Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed declared last night.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the MDP’s 5th National Congress, Nasheed stated that the country’s modern development and economic growth are direct results of the party’s initiatives.
He highlighted key achievements under past MDP administrations, noting that introducing a modern tax system expanded state revenue from MVR 7 billion to MVR 40 billion, laying the financial foundation for robust social protection systems.
Nasheed recalled that the first MDP government introduced state pensions, allowances for orphans, and inter-island transport networks that ended the isolation of island communities, while a subsequent MDP administration successfully navigated the nation through the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This party is the one that will continue to secure a better future for Maldivians,” Nasheed said, pointing also to the introduction of a national minimum wage and free first-degree university education.
Speaking at Malé City Hall in the presence of senior party officials, foreign diplomats, Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua, and People’s National Congress (PNC) Vice President and Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, Nasheed criticised the government’s policies, warning that the country is being driven “into an abyss” and calling for a change in government.
Addressing foreign relations, Nasheed critiqued the current administration’s foreign policy approach, emphasising that national security relies on close cooperation with regional neighbours.
He stated that understanding the geographical reality of the Maldives requires prioritising relations with immediate neighbours, stressing that placing India first in regional diplomacy is in no way detrimental to Maldivian dignity.
“Our geography, situated in the heart of the Indian Ocean, defines our foreign policy,” Nasheed affirmed, adding that advocating for close regional ties does not imply ill will towards other friendly nations.
The MDP National Congress continues, with delegates holding an Investment Forum focused on local councils before debating and voting on key amendments to the party charter and broader governance reform proposals.
