Digital blood donor register to improve donor coordination

A digitised national blood donor register will be introduced later this year to improve coordination between blood donors and recipients, according to Male’ City Group of Hospitals Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark World Blood Donor Day, Razzaq said a system has already been established through the OneGov portal to maintain a registry of thalassaemia patients. He said the decision to digitise the national blood donor register is expected to make the process more accessible and efficient for both donors and recipients.

Razzaq said the government is continuing efforts to expand and strengthen thalassaemia and blood-related healthcare services, with several new facilities and treatments introduced in recent years. He noted that a DNA laboratory was opened at the Thalassaemia Centre in February, while blood transfusion services are now also available on Fridays.

He added that endocrinology services were introduced in July 2025, followed by haematology services, antigen typing and bone marrow testing in August 2025. According to Razzaq, these developments represent some of the most significant changes at the centre since it was established 35 years ago.

Razzaq described blood donation as an act of compassion and social responsibility and highlighted its importance within Maldivian society. He also expressed appreciation to individual donors, private organisations and resorts that have supported blood donation campaigns and drives.

The government has identified improved care for thalassaemia patients and the maintenance of a reliable blood supply as key priorities. Thalassaemia patients require regular blood transfusions as part of their ongoing treatment.
