A new government-funded mosque has been officially opened in Gan, Laamu Atoll.

The inauguration ceremony was officiated by State Minister of Islamic Affairs, Abdul Azeez Jamal Aboobakuru. The event was attended by senior officials of the Gan Council and residents of the island.

Located in the Thundhee Aabaadhu area of Gan, the mosque has the capacity to accommodate 700 worshippers and includes designated spaces for both men and women. In addition to daily prayers, the facility is designed to host religious programmes and related activities.

The government is currently implementing a range of infrastructure projects within the Islamic sector across the country. As part of these efforts, 15 mosques were opened nationwide to coincide with Ramadan this year.

Last year, practical work began on 90 Islamic projects, including the construction of 74 mosques, seven Islamic centres, three Quran centres and six endowment buildings.

In addition, construction of Islamic centres is scheduled to commence in ten more islands during the course of this year.
