A new power plant has been officially inaugurated in Kendhoo, Baa Atoll, marking a step towards improving electricity reliability for residents of the island.

The facility was inaugurated during a special ceremony by the Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation Limited, Major (Retired) Mohamed Najah.

The Government awarded the project to Fenaka Corporation Limited as part of efforts to strengthen electricity services in Kendhoo. The project was later subcontracted to Sea Side Private Limited on 11 July 2021.

Construction work faced delays due to land acquisition challenges and the preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report. Physical construction work eventually began in late 2022.

The project deadline was extended several times at the contractor’s request. The initial completion target of 31 May 2023 was revised, followed by a six-month extension and two additional extensions thereafter.

Once fully operational, the new power plant is expected to provide more reliable and sustainable electricity supply to the residents of Kendhoo, supporting local development and improving living standards on the island.
